A Scent to Remember

Words and photography by Joshua Pang

The first thing I noticed upon arriving at The Singapore EDITION was the scent. A subtle blend of woodsmoke and citrus greeted me as the sliding doors opened. It wasn’t overpowering, but distinctive enough to make me pause. Even before taking in the interiors, I had already formed my first impression of the hotel.

The scent is a collaboration between The EDITION Hotels and Le Labo, the artisanal fragrance house known for its hand-blended perfumes and distinctive labels. Together, they created a signature fragrance with notes of cedar and black tea, designed to become part of the hotel experience rather than simply something pleasant in the background.

Throughout my stay, I began to notice how naturally the fragrance blended into the surroundings. It lingered in the lush lobby, where tropical plants stretched towards the light and sunlight fell across the marble floors. I noticed it again in my guestroom, alongside the crisp linens and the warmth of a freshly drawn bath. There was something reassuring about encountering the same familiar scent in different corners of the hotel.

I have always found it fascinating how certain smells can bring back memories of a place. At The Singapore EDITION, the fragrance became one of those details I kept returning to. There were afternoons spent by the pool and leisurely dinners at FYSH, the hotel's seafood restaurant, where thoughtfully sourced ingredients took centre stage. Yet amid the architecture, the food and the carefully considered interiors, it was the scent that stayed with me.

Long after checking out, I could still recall that first moment of stepping through the doors. It reminded me how a hotel can leave an impression in unexpected ways. Sometimes, all it takes is a familiar scent to bring you back to a place.
